Parent UniversityThe newly-developed “Knox County Schools Parent University” will begin its first series of “P.E.” (Parent Empowerment) classes beginning Monday, May 16. Classes are based on parent-identified needs and wants identified by parent surveys, as well as essential and fundamental topics designed to empower parents with many of the tools needed to best help students succeed. Classes are free, and registration is not required.
“A critical component of each class will involve parents being actively engaged as they exchange their own ideas, challenges, and solutions,” said Tracey Matthews, Supervisor of Family and Community Engagement the Knox County Schools. “These will not be ‘look and listen lectures.’”
The first class,“Help! How Do I Find Time to Help My Child Read?!,” is designed to help busy parents or other caregivers of children entering kindergarten through 5th grade uncover "hidden" opportunities to help their children develop and improve their reading skills. This class will be held in the auditoriums at Gresham Middle School (North/East Host Site), located at 500 Gresham Road, on Monday, May 16, 2011 and Bearden Middle School (South/West Host Site), located at 1000 Francis Road, on Wednesday, May 18, 2011. Both classes run from 6-7 p.m.
The second class, Help! My Child is Going To Kindergarten…Are We Ready?!, will cover the most effective ways parents or other caregivers of children currently in preschool or entering kindergarten can help future kindergarteners prepare for and prosper in kindergarten. This class will be held in the auditoriums at Vine Middle School (North/East Host Site), located at 1807 Martin L. King, Jr. Avenue, Tuesday, May 17, 2011 and South Doyle Middle School (South/West Host Site), located at 3900 Decatur Road, Thursday, May 19, 2011. Both classes run from 6-7 p.m.
Parent "graduates" will receive a certificate of participation and achievement at the end of each class, and community partners will provide free materials and resources to the first parents to arrive.
